The Basics

What are neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins are purified proteins derived from Clostridium botulinum that temporarily relax targeted facial muscles. When injected by a skilled provider, they smooth existing lines and prevent new ones from forming — without altering your natural expressions.

They are among the most studied and widely used treatments in aesthetic medicine, with an exceptional safety record spanning decades of clinical use. Results typically last 3–4 months, and with regular treatment, many patients find their results lasting longer over time.

At Woodstock Medical Aesthetics, Nikki Gewirz PA-C carefully selects the right neurotoxin for each patient based on their anatomy, goals, and treatment area — ensuring results that look effortless and feel completely natural.

Know Your Options

Botox, Xeomin, Dysport — what's the difference?

All three are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A products that work similarly — but each has distinct characteristics that may make one a better fit for your needs.

Xeomin

Merz · IncobotulinumtoxinA

Known as the "naked" neurotoxin — Xeomin is formulated without accessory proteins, which may reduce the risk of antibody resistance over time. A great option for patients who have used Botox for years.

  • Onset: 3–7 days, full effect at 2 weeks
  • Duration: 3–4 months
  • Best for: Frown lines, forehead, crow's feet
  • Protein-free formula — no accessory proteins
  • FDA approved since 2011 for cosmetic use

Dysport

Galderma · AbobotulinumtoxinA

Dysport has a slightly smaller molecule structure, allowing it to spread more easily — making it an excellent choice for larger treatment areas like the forehead. Many patients notice results a day or two sooner.

  • Onset: 2–3 days, full effect at 2 weeks
  • Duration: 3–5 months
  • Best for: Forehead lines, large muscle groups
  • Diffuses more broadly than Botox
  • FDA approved since 2009 for cosmetic use
The Process

What to expect

01

02

Treatment

A series of small injections using ultra-fine needles. Most patients describe minimal discomfort. The appointment takes 15–30 minutes.

03

Results

You'll begin to notice softening within 3–5 days. Full results appear at 2 weeks, with no downtime required after treatment.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Will I look frozen or unnatural?
Not with a skilled injector. Nikki's approach is conservative and anatomy-focused — the goal is always to enhance your expressions, not erase them. You'll look refreshed, never frozen.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe the sensation as a tiny pinch. Needles used for neurotoxin injections are ultra-fine, and treatments are completed quickly. A topical numbing cream is available upon request.
Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime. You may have minor redness or tiny bumps at injection sites that resolve within 20–30 minutes. You can return to normal activities immediately — just avoid strenuous exercise, lying flat, and rubbing the treated area for 4 hours post-treatment.
How soon will I see results?
Most patients begin noticing results within 3–5 days. Full results are visible at 2 weeks, which is when a follow-up touch-up can be performed if needed.
What happens if I stop getting treatments?
Your muscles will gradually return to their normal activity. You will not look worse than before — your face will simply return to its natural state over time.
Which neurotoxin is right for me?
That depends on your anatomy, treatment area, and goals. Nikki will recommend the best option during your consultation — whether that's Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport, you're in expert hands.
